Smarter Cities: A Framework for Change

An estimated 60 million people are moving to cities and urban areas each year, more than one million every week. Worldwide, cities consume 75 percent of the world’s energy, emit more than 80 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide and lose as much as 20 percent of their water supply due to infrastructure leaks. According to Transport Canada, traffic congestion costs Canada’s nine largest cities close to $4 billion a year. If Canada’s current electrical grid were just five percent more efficient, it would be comparable to permanently eliminating the fuel and greenhouse gas emissions from four million cars.
