In today's digital age, information is rapidly becoming the most important currency for public sector organizations focused on austerity measures or building shared services. At its core, a government's purpose is to serve its citizens. Like most private sector companies, one of the most outstanding challenges that governments face today is the inundation are drowning in unprecedented volumes of data, compromising the efficient provision and delivery of service. Sources range from internal operational information and market research to external unstructured information like photos and comments from citizens on Web sites. In fact, industry analyst IDC has predicted total data volume will reach 35,000 exabytes by 2020. One of these exabytes is the digital equivalent of a trillion novels.
