The columnists have concluded that the Prime Minister’s promise about ‘our last’ first-past-the-post (FPTP) election leads into a political cul-de-sac. First, the commitment not simply to review, but to change, reduces the policy space available. Second, the decision not to employ a referendum or a Royal Commission, but rather a Parliamentary Committee, corners each party into a disillusioned assessment of its own interests, which turn out to be irreconcilable.
