MUNICIPAL-INDIGENOUS COLLABORATION IN THE CONTEXT OF URBAN INDIGENOUS HOUSING

Urban Indigenous social housing organizations operate in many municipalities throughout Canada and provide one solution out of many to the problem of urban Indigenous homelessness in Canada. Contrary to assumptions, the majority of Indigenous persons in Canada reside in urban settings, and also represent some of the fastest growing demographics in Canada. Additionally, while one in 128 Canadians in the general population are homeless, this number is 1 in 15 for Indigenous persons living in urban centres in Canada. Although cities offer extensive opportunities in education, recreation, and employment, Indigenous persons in urban settings experience lower levels of employment and higher instances of poverty than the general Canadian population.
