TOFINO’S MAIN STREET VITALIZATION
JOSIE OSBORNE, MAYOR OF THE DISTRICT OF TOFINO

Main Street is the historic heart of Tofino, a small village of 2,000 residents on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. As a settlement originally accessible only by water, Tofino grew inland from the water, and for decades Main Street was the centre of commerce with docks, a post office, stores, a school, a hotel and beautiful homesteads. In 1959, a road connecting Tofino to Alberni and Nanaimo was completed, and over the next decade the highway was improved and eventually paved in 1971. Vehicle access greatly impacted growth and development and much of the commercial and civic emphasis moved one block inland to Campbell Street. Today, three parallel blocks of Main and Campbell Streets form the core of Tofino’s downtown.
