Toronto Council backs tolls for Gardiner, DVP
Toronto City Council has voted 32-9 in support of Mayor John Tory’s proposal to introduce road tolls to the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway.
According to the Toronto Star, the final decision will not be made until sometime in 2017, but the council vote provides Tory with a strong mandate to move forward with the plan.
Council will consider additional measures to provide more revenue for the city, including new taxes on hotel stays and short-term rentals, and an increase to the tax for third-party signage.
The tolls and taxes are part of an effort to find new revenue to pay for a host of infrastructure projects, including the $3.6 billion Gardiner renewal project and billions worth of unfunded transit projects.
